Year: 2006

Set: Topps Heritage (Rate)

Card: #319 Steve Smith

“ Topps has such a vast history of designs, but almost never crosses sports (or sports with non-sports). An almost untapped field...it's nice to see on the rare occasions when they do it, as is here. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ This card packs a punch. ” -parsley24

“ I know it's been used and abused over and over again, but I'll never get tired of this classic Topps design. I kinda wish they had used this template for the Living Set, even at the expense of the artwork. ” -mkaz80

“ Love this Heritage set. Even though it is based on a baseball design. I definitely need to complete my team sets of the Skins and Rams maybe even go for the full base set. ” -captkirk42

“ Decent design but don't like that it was also for the baseball set and I don't know for sure but probably basketball and hockey as well. ” -davidhandberry

“ 2005 heritage was one of my favorite sets of all time they used like 5 different classic designs, shortprints, and rookie variations, but when 2006 came out I was kinda disappointed they only used the one design, I did like the looks of it though and was disappointed when they didn't bring back heritage in 2007, also one of my favorite parts of heritage was the thick non glossy cardstock ” -Thunderfoot

“ Really nice looking card. The color looks off, I can't tell if that is the scan or the throwback look of the card, but I like it either way. ” -muskie027

“ Too much border, not enough stats, awful facsimile auto. He was an amazing receiver for his 5' 9". Unfortunately, football players rarely have a lengthy career. ” -baseballcardstoreca

Based on the coloration of the team logo, I think that's the "heritage" affect, in regards to Muskie's comment.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I didn't care much for Heritage in any sport until they used this design for the NFL set. Overall, I still like the design but it's not like I'll try to go buy a box today. I still need this card for my Panthers PC though.

@baseballcardstoreca - "Smitty" played for 17 seasons! He was drafted by the Panthers in 2001 and retired after the 2017 season. He spent all but 2 of those with the Carolina Panthers. He was released after the 2015 season for salary reasons. Baltimore signed him and he was only going to play one year, but got injured during the season and decided to play another season. He is now working for NFL Network as an analyst.

He is one of the best Panthers players in their short history and totally deserved to be added to their version of the Team HOF earlier this season! Oddly, he is still not my favorite Panthers WR. That honor goes to Muhsin Muhammad. "Moose" was drafted in '96. His 6'2" frame made all defenses go after him when Smith was on the other side 6 years later and Steve made them pay for it. Muhsin left for the Bears in 2005 b/c he wasn't offered the money he deserved, but then came back to Charlotte for the final few years of his career (and still paired with Smith). Smith and Muhammad are still currently #'s 1 & 2 in Panthers receiving yards and receiving TD's.

The fake auto ruins this card for me.

I saw the best cards of my generation destroyed by creases, soft cornered hysterical edge wear, dragging themselves through the hobby shops at dawn looking for a top loader...
