Year: 2008-09

Set: Fleer - 1986-87 Rookies (Rate)

Card: #86R-165 O.J. Mayo

“ I like retro throwback cards but Fleer did this set way too much. They threw back to it at least 4 times I can think of off the top of my head. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I remember the hype around him when he went into the NBA. 10 years later and he is playing in Asia because of continual bad choices, always breaking rules. The card though is greatness. Love the border, the backdrop, is great. The back is very well done, wish they hadn't used blue on red on the top, kinda hard for my eyes to see very well, but that is a minor, personal issue. Front is a 10, back is a 9. ” -davidhandberry

“ I hate when they recycle ideas. ” -NJDevils

“ Nice Rookie card. A commemorative Rookie insert set with a retro design? ” -captkirk42

“ Nice to see a kid from Huntington as the RCOTD. ” -UKboogie

“ Retro style rookie insert themed stuff is cool. They should be relished, if you haven't started collecting this set there is still time to ketchup and complete it. ” -baseballcardstoreca

@ Billy;  I can only think of Fleer doing this design once (1986) and Upper Deck rehashing it numerous times.  Did Fleer rehash the design before they went bankrupt?

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Fleer had a "Decade of Excellence" insert set in 1996-97, but those were basically just reprints of key 1986-87 cards with "modern production values" (i.e. glossy coating, foil stamping).

The 2001-02 Fleer Platinum set used the 61-62 design for the base cards and the 86-87 design for the rookies.

There was also a single card Vince Carter "Old School Raptor" insert in either 00-01 or 01-02 Fleer Tradition that used the 86-87 design.

And yes, then Upper Deck used the design at least four more times: 2006-07 20th Anniversary insert set (132 cards), 07-08 retro rookies (30 cards, continuing the numbering from the previous year), 08-09 retro rookies (ditto), and a 10 or 15 card insert set in 2011-12 Fleer Retro.

Thanks Brad. I actually forgot the Old School Raptor card even though I have two of the three versions.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I feel this design has come up on the RCOTD at least a couple times since I have been on the site.
