“ It is mind-boggling that this is a nice-looking card at the same time it is rather boring and lame . . . ” -georgecf

“ Nice card during the super overproduced years. ” -captkirk42

“ Love the section at the bottom of the back of this card with the before and after stats from the All-Star break. The little sleeping guy is priceless! ” -CollectingAfterDeath
  2
“ Top 5 set of the 1980s for design, in my opinion. I remember Kal was a huge prospect back when he first came up, and I think I was still collecting him at this point. ” -vrooomed

I heard Barry Larkin say he was the best player he saw play and could do everything.

The Reds made a great trade in 1989 when Kal was coming off his 4th knee surgery.  They traded Daniels and Lenny Harris for Mariano Duncan and Tim Leary.  They dealt Leary to the Yankees after the 1989 season for Hal Morris.  Duncan and Morris were both major contributors to their 1990 World Championship team.  Kal had another knee surgery in 1989 and then had his last good season with the Dodgers in 1990 (.296 avg/27 hr/94 rbi/.920 ops) -- the only season where he got an MVP vote (1-10th place vote).  His best season was 1987 even though he only played in 108 games (.334 avg/26 hr/64 rbi/.429 obp/1.046 ops).  He led the league with a .397 obp in 1988.  He spent half a season with the Dodgers and half a season with the Cubs in 1992.  Chronic knee injuries led to a very early end of his career at the age of 29 after that season.  He made $2 mil in 1991 and $2.5 mil in 1992 so hopefully he invested it wisely.  For a few seasons he really was a great compliment to another oft-injured player, Eric Davis.

Looking at this with modern eyes, it's not great...but was stella at the time.
