I was looking through ebay for cards, like I do during this quarantine, and came across this item -

A 1983 Topps Marcus Allen rooki ecard...starting bid $550!!! FIVE HUNDRED FIFTY BUCKS?!?!?!?!

Also, a slabbed card asking price $695!!!!!!!!!!!

He meant to start it $5 I'm sure, keyboard got stuck....

Who would send $550 to a zero feedback seller anyway?

Man! And I've traded TWO in the past month and a half! Not for $550 cards, either. 

I love how, on my advertised scroll just below this, there's several other of the same card advertised for the $5-10 range...

Maybe he meant $5.50 and missed the decimal point.

It's the early 90's again, for those who weren't lucky enough to live it, here is a little bit of how it went down.

MANY saw the hobby was busy and thought oh i could get rich quick(kinda like now) so many newbies at that time (just like now) 

who know zippidy do dah about cards just come across some cardboard and attach any ol' price and hope to reel someone in if they do hey great if not it didn't cost much to have the line in the water and not get a bite.

NOW things are compounded 100x because there are so many options "to screw" you have 5 to 10 versions of a 1 of 1(ho hum) the #'d to 5 then 10 25,50 75,99 etc and of course attach those to a zion or jasson and cha-ching. 

Occasionally and it happens now some fish will bite and pay 500+$ for some worm that never even gets a day in the major leagues hence burning many of these minnows who realize too late they can't afford to stockpile many 500$ cards(which are no longer worth that but paid it) and suddenly where did he vanish? now 15-25 years later he's back saying i haven't collected(insert record scratch sound) you never were a collector, nor any sort of good dealer to begin with just the Johnny-come-lately get-rich-quick get the f-outta here.

I've been seeing allot of this nonsence lately, especially on Facebook Marketplace.  Common stars worth at best $1.00 with asking prices of $50-$300.  I can't tell if it's sellers trying to take advantage of newbies or newbies seeing PSA 10 items on Ebay and not knowing the difference.  Either way it's frustrating to see.

At some point, I have begun to wonder if some of the slabbed wax-era cards in the 50 dollar asking price range are just people who've found a great condition card with a big name on the front, had it slabbed, realized that maybe it wasn't worth it to get it slabbed, are just people trying to recover the price of what it cost to be graded..? Just a thought
