I like these types of discussions.
I have a nice little collection of baseball HOFers (4 binders+) and I like to hang onto cards of those players that I enjoy and those that I think will be enshrined someday. I have missed the boat on a couple players throughout the years (those that made it that I didn't collect) and missed on way more in the other direction (saved a lot of non-HOFer cards!).
David Ortiz is one of theose players I never collected. I'm pretty sure I have a bunch in my commons boxes and I just got a bunch more (and it seems every product I open has an insert or parallel of him in it!). I looked at his stats, and formed my own opinion (earlier today) and want to know what my fellow collectors have to say on the topic. So, Big Papi - Hall of Famer or Hall of Very Gooder?

I think he gets in. I don't know about first ballot, but I think he gets in eventually. Over 500 home runs usually puts you in. He was also a big part of some World Series teams - 2004 when they broke the curse, and 2013, the Boston Marathon year.

He probably won’t make it but he had quite a few big moments in his career that were enough for me to admire him. I’m not a Red Sox fan but I’ll add him to my wantlist if I need him in a set.

Questionable steroid user. He won't get in for now.

Shouldn't get in...Career DH with a history of steroids. He'll get in because he played in one of the East Coast media markets. Had he put up a similar career in Kansas City or Cincinnati or Milwaukee, he wouldn't have a chance...

I've been back and forth on him. I think he is borderline at best. A chance he gets in, but I wouldn't say it is a lock.

He'll get in, but won't be first ballot. The DH stigma will most asuredly cause the delay, the steroid accusation maybe not so much. Much like Bagwell, Piazza, and others suspicion from the one "failed" test alone will be enough. Unlike Bagwell, Piazza et al, he was consistent in his career after testing started, no drop off (yes, some down years, but all players have those). What will finally do it in (he has the signature milestone of 500 HR's), outside of immense Boston media and fan pressure, will be the iconic moments he has produced. It's not just one signature moment, it's many. How many times did he enforce his will and propel the Sox to a victory in the playoffs; '04, Hunter going over the wall, '13 (oh, the speech!), it goes on. And that doesn't include his charitable work.

I have to agree with the "no"s. Just a glorified DH who rarely spent time in he actual game. The AL has got to get rid of the DH. Also, Ortiz has the PED stigma.
