So, re-sorting and selecting cards for sale/trade on 90 Topps today, I experienced the strangest serendipity. Of the first 7 cards in my collection (forgetting the White Sox cards that were already pulled), 5 were catchers. Also happened to be 5 of the 7 found in 1-100. I continued with 6 of the next 8 cards being catchers (missing none). Four of the next five before encountering my first miss in 101-200. From 201-350, a few more misses, but then back to at least half of the cards being catchers.
All told, 39 of the 82 cards I sorted through were backstops. Of the 104 unique cards owned in this set, I had 40 altogether (not including the Carlton Fisk All-Star card), just short of 66% of the 62 total catchers in the base set.
- Teams missing: 1, Pittsburgh
- Teams with a full contingent of catchers: X, Boston (2), Chicago White Sox (2), Cleveland (2), Detroit (2), Los Angeles Dodgers (2), Milwaukee (2), New York Yankees (2), Toronto (3)
- Teams with more than 3 catcher cards:
- Braves, 4 of 5 catchers (includes the Tyler Houston first round draft/RC)
- Chicago Cubs, 3 of 4 (Lloyd McClendon listed as C-1B)
So instead of putting most of these cards on my FS/T list, I think I'm going to try to get the full set of catchers for 90 Topps.
Collecting White Sox, Royals, and 1978 Topps Baseball. Trying to build a multi-sport HOF frankenset.
Done is better than perfect.
