From the little you wrote, I am not sure what you are asking.

For Factory set vs. pack cards, the stripes on the front are different.  Also, one the back, the LEAF, INC. on the back will or will not have a period at the end.  When going through a group of cards, I always separate them by INC./INC cards first.

I think I've read all the 91 Donruss forum posts and looked at the gallery of scans, but it still isn't clear to me how to determine whether a card in-hand is a factory or pack version.  Clearly the borders are different, but is there any consistent rule to identify which variant is which (without comparing to tcdb scans)?

I presume factory set variants all include the period after INC on the back?  Correct?

Correct on the FS VAR being "INC.".  As for identifying a single or loose cards in hand to whether they are from packs or the FS VAR, the only way is to compare them to the scans.
