Whats the deal with the 3 parallel sets listed in the data base? Wrong sport (Hockey) or Wrong Year and no cards scanned. Some sort of mistake in database or am I off?
1. 1990 Upper Deck baseball Holgram
2. 1990-91 Upper Deck Hockey Hologram
3. 1992 Upper Deck Hologram
Thanks,
~Patirck

I still have about 12,000Plus Cardinals cards from 2009-present to sort through and enter. Please do not offer any Cardinals cards from 2008-present unless you contact me first as there is a chance I already have it amongst the multitude to still go through. I still have about 30K Cardinals duplicates that are not yet entered in the database as FS/FT. "For the love of the game"

No mistake. It has to do with the small hologram foil shaped like homeplate on the back of the card. The variation is the pattern on the holofoil. Some have the correct (?) 90 Upper Deck MLB "baseball" pattern; which shows a series of baseballs when held in the light correctly. Some have the wrong 1990-91 Upper Deck NHL "crossed hockey sticks" pattern. Some have a generic "1991 Upper Deck" pattern.
IMO, purely ridiculous minutia for a variation.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Thanks for the info. Seems like they should be listed as an error or variation instead of a inserts set in and of themselves.

They should be categorized as a parallel set, not as an insert set. I get the impression that the option for the 'parallel' category was added to the database at some point because a lot of products have everything aside from the base set listed as 'insert'. I've been correcting those as I find them.
In cases like this where the 'variation' exists for the whole set, I think it makes the listing cleaner to list them as their own 'parallel' set, otherwise you'll have a checklist with an a, b, c, etc., variation for every card in the set. That would get unweildly quick. Also, for people who don't care about the different versions, it is easier for them to ignore them when they are listed as a separate parallel set.

Another problem with having these parallel sets...it's a total waste. The scans will NEVER show the differences in the tiny holofoil. The scans in the base and all three parallels will look EXACTLY the same. We'd have to have full size (350 x 250) scans of just the holofoil homeplate to see the differences.

So those are the three parallels - what is the logo on the base set? I have thousands of these - am I sitting on a small fortune? (LOL)

Seriously? Whoever had the time to figure that one out an notice it? For what its worth I found a blog that seems to show the differences. And quite frankly the "Hockey Stick" one doesn't look like a Hockey sticks to me. Maybe I'm missing something they are all properly shaped like homeplate.

C2 - It's not a waste for those members who do (and will in the future) care about the variation and want to use the database to precisely catalog their collection and trade stock.
captkirk - The difference is not in the shape of the holofoil stamp, it's in the graphic pattern that shows up IN the holofoil.
Once again, I'm not saying that any particular person should or should not care about variations at any particular level of detail, but I strongly believe that the database listings should contain this level of precision in order for it to be useful to those members who do care about them.

I had no idea about all those "variations". I'll have to check everything I have from 1991 UD. I checked all my STL cards and none have a different hologram.

To re-open an old thread...
I just added scans for 52 cards that were missing from the Hockey hologram CL until I listed them a couple of days ago. Here's the actual breakdown:
* 1991 UD regular hologram cards have UPPER DECK text and 91 is found on a different "level" of the hologram. Move the card around under light and you'll see it (usually upside-down).
* 1990 Baseballs Hologram is pretty self-explanatory. The holograms have baseballs inside of the hologram just like 1990 UD MLB cards had.
* 1990-91 Crossed Hockey Sticks Holograms really stand out the best. The hockey sticks are hard to see, but a large 90 is highly visible in the holograms. The 90 really jumps out at you. See all the new scans I added. Even with no color in the hologram, you see the 90 for most of them.
All player, team, and HOF collectors should add to their wantlists for the Hockey Sticks cards. My new additions added seveal of all types. I got 6 for my STL PC just from this stack (with 1 extra to trade).
