I think you guys are making me much older than I am. The inserts of my era of starting out were All Star cards and team logo stickers. My Mom was still in elementary school in 1967. Also, I NEVER had to walk to school, no matter what the weather was like. The worst I had was a quarter-mile (or so) walk to the bus-stop. I did have to do that in the rain and in freezing temps many times, but never in the snow. Well, maybe I did if it was just flurries, but never in snow of more than an inch on the ground. I don't even think I ever lived more than 8 miles from any of my schools. Even though I lived in many areas outside of city limits, my school was never more than 8 miles away. All 3 of the elementary schools I went to were no more than 3 miles away from home, but I didn't have to walk to them.
Here's a fun fact: My first elementary school just got TRADED this week. That's right! TRADED!!! My first home was in a town that used to be named Elon College. It was named after the private college that the town was basically built around. When the college changed their name to Elon University, the town dropped College from their name. The town of Elon just traded the elementary school (where I went from Kindergarten through 3rd grade) to the University. Elon University will now build a new school for the town at a location farther from the ever-expanding campus in return for getting the school's land. That was about the only way they could expand eastward anymore. They bought a private school and it's land on their southern border several years ago to make way for more dorms. The University has basically become the entire center of the whole town. They even got the County and the largest city in the county to build a 4-lane connector road several miles long to link the Interstate to the Sports Complex! That road has exploded with retail businesses building all along it (oddly without a single gas station though). There is a Sheetz station in the future though. Elon University is also trying to buy the Post Office and it's little bitty 1/2 acre. USPS says no way we will give up this prime spot. From where I live now (30 years later and much farther north than when I was a kid), I would get to the sports fields before I get to any other part of the University. My 1st home is only about 1/2 a mile from the football field now. Back then, I was about 2 miles from the main building of the campus. There was also a shopping center halfway b/t the 2 places with a grocery store, a pharmacy, some other small businesses and a Pizza Hut on the corner at the intersection. That whole shopping center has since been demolished and rebuilt as part of the University and the Pizza Hut is now just part of the parking lot.
Oops, I got to rambling there. I have just never heard of a town/city/county trading a school. The school was owned by the town but still a part of the Alamance-Burlington School System. Also when I was in school, it was part of the Alamance County Schools system. A few years after I graduated from high school, ACS and the Burlington City School System merged together to become the ABSS. I don't know why it didn't happen sooner though. Burlington City Schools only had 2 high schools and the elementary and middle schools that led to them. Alamance County had 4 high schools and everything leading up to those. It worked out well for us in the County system for winter weather though. They rarely canceled school for snow in the city, but the county schools got closed if there was any threat of snow or ice. They weren't putting buses out on slick roads in the rural areas where the speed limit is 45-55 mph!
