I'm sorting my basketball cards (still) and as I add these, I find myself wondering about something. We have the Gold set listed as a parallel. But as I have both the base and Gold Tim Duncan, you'll notice something if you compare them side-by-side: Base vs. Gold
If you aren't sure when viewing them on two separate links, the photos are different. It appears that this holds true for all of the Gold cards; they have different images than the base. Thus, shouldn't this just be an insert set? To me, it isn't a true parallel when one of the most key elements of the cards are different.
On the other hand, the checklist numbers and names follow each other exactly. So, if I'm wrong, please educate me: is that all it takes to be a parallel? I've already stated my opinion above, but I've also found that what has seemed obvious to me before isn't always the case.
Let's discuss, shall we?
-------------------------------
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

I'd call it a parallel. Card numers and players parallel the base checklist and the card design is the same.
-------------------------------
Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I am with C2Cigars, the checklist is the same and even though the images are different the rest is constent.

Different pictures doesn't seem like a parallel to me. It seems like a different set with the same numbering and names. You should ask admin to decide instead of a forum straw poll. Admin decides all because this is her site!

This happened in baseball too with Ultra - the Gold and Platinum Medallion parallels featured different photos on the fronts (back photos were the same). They are parallels.

Highly interesting. I'd almost call it an Alternate set, except, there really is no such thing. A cool philosophical debate! Parallel seems the best definition

Fleer was doing it as early as 1997 with Ultra baseball:
Base: Gold Medallion: Platinum Medallion:

Some of the O-Pee-Chee retro sets produced by Upper Deck featured not only different photos but even completely different graphic designs (both front and back), and we still list them as parallels here. Compare these, for example:
