Thank You for the adds theFalcon
Don't know if you're looking to expand beyond baseball, but there's always Ernie Davis (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/3208/cid/807516/1962-Topps-36-Ernie-Davis) Heisman Trophy winner drafted #1 overall by the Washington Redskins in 1962, he was immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns for future HoF Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Jackson (drafted #11 overall in 1962). He was then diagnosed with Leukemia, and coach Paul Brown refused to take the risk of letting him play, Davis never played a down in an NFL game. The Browns still retired his #45 jersey.

A few more from the '69 Topps set: Jack Billingham, Larry Miller, Dennis Ribant and Fred Newman.
Two more from the '69 Topps set: Dave Nicholson and Jessie Gonder.
... and the 1970 Topps Bill Dillman.
Nice work! Thanks again Falcon
If you decide to include 1969 Topps Team Posters, you'll find a few more (ex: Ron Davis with the San Diego Padres).
Add in 1969 Russ Nixon and 1968 Joe Moeller.
| ||
1971 John Matias #546 never played for the Royals and 1971 Don O'Riley #679 never played for the White Sox. They were part of the same trade.
Good work Falcon! Keep them coming!
Aurelio Monteagudo is a twofer ... 1967 Reds and 1972 Brewers.
Never had a two-fer before! Nice work!
| ||
Chris Cannizzaro, 1966 Braves Derrell Griffith, 1967 Astros Felix Mantila, 1967 Cubs

" There is no record of him ever being in the Orioles organization. " The Orioles drafted Larry Miller in the 1968 Rule V Draft. I don't know if he went to spring training with them or what happened from there. But he was there property at some point.
Baseball Reference does have him being drafted by the Orioles in the 1968 Rule V draft but I can't find any record of him ever pitching in their organization. But now it gets even stranger. His obituary says he moved to Phoenix and retired after the 1967 season. Baseball Reference has him pitching for the Giants Triple AA team in Phoenix in '68 & '69. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/azcentral/obituary.aspx?pid=188702748
| ||
Turns out Miller did go to Spring Training with the Orioles in 1968. They cut him in early April, then optioned him back to Phoenix, who they had drafted him from.
Does Jose Canseco's 2002 Topps card count? Was with Expos that spring but called it a day before the season started. Is this for players who literally never had an opportunity to even don the jersey? I have a feeling covid may add a few instances of this for the 2020 set Edit: NM saw that this cuts off after the 70s!

From 1972: Don Pavletich, Bobby Pfeil, César Gutiérrez, Lowell Palmer and Rich Robertson.
From 1977 Topps: Dave Hilton, Dave Roberts (infielder), Kurt Bevacqua and Bill Greif From 1977 OPC: Leon Hooton, Doug Howard and Bill Greif
Ken Retzer (1965) | ||
1962: Johnny Kucks, Harry Chiti, Bobby Locke and Dan Dobbek.
| ||
Thanks again Falcon | ||
1964: Bob Allen, Jim Coker, Jim Campbell and Mike Joyce.
The Falcon strikes again! Thanks much.
Whoops, how did I miss these before ... 1971 Steve Huntz, Gene Brabender, Jim Qualls and John Purdin.
| ||
1978 Topps Dennis Blair
Roy Foster (1972) never played with the Rangers, except in spring training. I picked up on Foster when I was looking up Mudcat Grant. There's a 1972 team-issued photo of Grant on this site in a Cleveland uniform. I thought he was done after 1971 ... I didn't know until now that he went to the Indians training camp in 1972. He was in the last cut on April 5. They offered him a contract to pitch at Portland (AAA), but he chose to retire instead. Apparently it was a short retirement as he ended being the closer for the Iowa Oaks (AAA) ... I assume he was hoping to get called up by the Oakland A's later in the season, but it never happened.
OPC 1979 Pete Broberg | ||
Willie Crawford (1977) Steve Barber (1974)
| ||
Larry Hisle (1972) | ||
This particular Bob Miller never pitched for the StL Cardinals: https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/43/cid/8341/1959-Topps-379-Bob-Miller
As I always do when someone dies, I reviewed all the cards I have of Grant Jackson. Immediately thought of this list. You've got it. Well done. v3
The 1979 OPC Bob Robertson card lists him with Kansas City, but he never played for them. The Sports Transaction DB says the Royals cut him in early April of '79.
I have stumbled into another, great, one. Topps anticipated that Angel Scull would break the color barrier for the Washington Senators/Nationals in 1954, so they made a card for him that year. He never made it to the "majors."
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/71564/cid/5605136/2011-Topps-Texas-Rangers-TEX13-Brandon-Webb
Brandon Webb - 2011 for the Texas Rangers He played 4 games in AA but never made the majors again
Shame too, because he was so good for a time
Your 1970 Topps #574 Bobby Bolin entry is incorrect. The Pilots moved before the start of the 1970 season.
Another more recent more https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/1562/cid/303596/2002-Topps-435-Jose-Canseco In February 2002, Jose Canseco signed with the Expos, but was released basically a month later in March. He didn't actually retire though, as he signed again with the White Sox and played some games in the minors that year before being released.
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/43/cid/8395/1959-Topps-431-Whammy-Douglas Played only 11 games with the Pirates, traded to Reds in 1959 but spent rest of career in minors.
1970 Jim Gosger - never played with the Giants during regular season.
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/225356/cid/14901804/2020-Topps---Yellow-521-Felix-Hernandez Still a free agent at the time, just never played an actual game with Atlanta.
| ||
1955 Bowman Johnny Pesky with BAL
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/68/cid/29615/1968-Topps-63-Dick-Kenworthy Never played for the Mets
Thanks for another one Falcon!
If you want to stretch the rules, you could add this Topps "card" ,,, never played for the Royals - https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/10191/cid/443360/1969-Topps-Stamps-NNO-Hoyt-Wilhelm
Streched-Thanks again Falcon
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/35/cid/26872/1955-Bowman-216-Preacher-Roe
Preacher Roe- Orioles- 1955 Bowman
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/47/cid/27744/1960-Topps-144-Al-Stieglitz Al Stieglitz 1960 Topps Giants
Thanks WisYanksfan !
| ||
Always glad to help! And just a heads up Stieglitz was a batter, not a pitcher as you listed him
| ||
A bit of a different case that everyone else, but it seems uncommon for a player on this sort of card. Scott McGregor never played a game in the majors for the Yankees
https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/76/cid/19116/1975-Topps-618-1975-Rookie-Pitchers-(Jamie-Easterly-/-Tom-Johnson-/-Scott-McGregor-/-Rick-Rhoden)
Right after posting I remembered rookie cards are excluded
| ||
1972 Tim Cullen and Tom McCraw ... neither played with the Texas Rangers.
1969 Leon Wagner ... never played with the Reds. |
