In the current era, if you aren't interested in all of the gimmicks, i.e. SP and VAR, then buying sell-off lots from box breakers goes a long way to completing sets. Usually only the one or two RC who make it big end up costing more and even then, not terribly more if you are patient.

I took "Try to acquire a hand-collated set" as including building the set from lots and singles yourself.

I think "acquire" indicates trading or buying.

That was my take, too.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I wish it was by buying boxes and packs, except it just too expensive.  Even boxes from the 90s are now priced for hits.

Most of my sets are now started either since I won a box of random cards at a local auction and it included s starter set or it's a set I like and I start basically from scratch trading for it.

I would say All of the above.   As when my son and I was building sets we did all the ways depended on the set.

Now I have 2 Husker sets that I would like to finish but not a big thing if I do not get them done.
