1986 Topps
User Comments |
86 was my gateway into the hobby. I was playing little league baseball and Wade Boggs was becoming my idol. My brother got me some packs for my birthday that ignited the chase for Wade Boggs cards.

The greatest set of all time. The photography and the varied types of shots they have among the set, the real and complex emotions captured, is just awesome.
My first packs... My little brother and I would bmx down to the local 7-11 and grab a pack (with the sticks of gum inside) and a slurpee. Good times.
First pack to my recollection. Not the easiest set to gem up after being wrapped in rubber bands and stored in a shoe box. Could bike ride to the drug store where they sold in retail and I do remember my buddy and I riding up for more every time we had a $1.05ish. Got hooked pretty quickly and was ready to get into football/basketball, but moms insisted that only baseball cards would be worth anything. Wouldn't mind having a couple binder pages of Jordan/Rice rookies lol.
One of my favorite Topps designs is '86. Prob in my top 5 designs of all time along with '64-'71-'72-'07-'08 or may just be the odd man out and sit at my #6. I may be biased though. From what I understand a lot of collectors aren't to fond of this particular year. Not sure if they are only considering the value or the card in a whole. But back in 1987 when I was 7 yrs old on my bday in Feb. is when I opened my very first pack of baseball cards and I was given 7 packs of 1986 Topps from my Grandfather, Called him Pops. He was more like a father to me then my actual father. He had just previously introduced me to the Philadelphia Phillies on TV in 1986 and began teaching me the game so I would have an idea of what I was doing before teaching me on a field before starting tball that coming season. First player I seen that caught my attention was ole #20 M. Schmidt. I was watching and listening but wasn't sucked in yet until he hit a line drive that only cleared the fence by maybe 6-10 inches but it was a missle. I was in awe, and confused at the same time not knowing what happened when a batter hit one over. I was listening to him try to explain things earlier into the game but as a 6 yr old I wasn't completely listening. Then he explained it one more time. I was pumped. I was then also hooked. I grabbed my first pack, ripped it open and wouldn't you know, 1st card, there's my favorite player of all time to this day, looks as though he just smacked one over the fence to left center. Ole Michael Jack Schmidt. Still have the card. All beat to hell, took it everywhere I went for probably close to a year. It's in a toploader these days. For what? Who knows. Isn't worth a nickel I have mint ones now but that one is still my favorite
This is my first pack open. I collect almost exclusively hockey cards now, but this started it all for sports cards.
my first card set! Technically, my first single card was a George Brett rookie my mom gave to me.
I love how these cards look. The bold team names at the top make the set so unique and fun.
Oddly enough, this was the first pack of baseball cards I opened. From then on I was hooked.
This was the first pack I opened, while in my pull-ups.
This was my 1st pack ever opened. Pretty sure mom got them for me at local Publix supermarket... the good old days.
When this first came out, I thought it was bland. As the years went by, I have come to appreciate it more. 7/10.
First pack of cards I bought. Cello packs from Schnucks. Awesome design. Had a stack of maybe 500 by the time 1987 came out. I seem to recall about half of them were Storm Davis or Jesse Orosco.
First pack of cards I remember buying. Scored a Vince Coleman rookie and a Reggie Jackson. Still have the Jackson but in really rough shape, as a 7 year old kid, I had no clue about sharp corners.
| ||
Note: The send-in Glossy All-Stars have parallel sets with Light Gray Backs and White Backs.
| ||
My first card purchases, from Fecteau's Country Store in Epping NH. 2 bucks for five packs. They were promptly encased in a rubber band and stuck in a pocket to show my friends at recess. Third grade, if I remember correctly.
Picked up a second complete base set of the 86 topps getting ready to build my binder.IF I was to build this set as a complete PSA set through a guy I know with his pricing to send the cards in little at a time it would coast me over time up to $14,000 dollars, you think it would ever sell then.
Although I think I opened a few packs of 1985 Topps, it was the 1986 packs that REALLY got me into collecting. I once took a bus trip with our church youth group, and we stopped at a Toys R Us, and I bought all the rack packs I could afford. STILL a great memory, and although there aren't a boatload of rookies, the 1986 set will always be great nostalgia for me.
Most of my box bottom cards are still 4 card panels.
| ||
First pack of cards I ever bought. Hard earned chore money nabbed me a pack a week that summer. Kept the poor guy's in the sock drawer. Live and learn...
This set has really grown on me over the years. The card designs just look classic.
I think this is one of Topps best sets from the 80s,and I will have a lot of fun completing it!

the first set that I truly tried to complete through wax packs and trades (preinternet days) I never did complete it as I bought tons of packs and still was missing about 20-25 cards. beautiful set! loved the pete rose specials!
Very tough to get a whole box bottom panel in mint condition. Bottoms tend to have scratches from sliding and creases simply because it is a box bottom, a container.
This was the first set of cards (aside from the Quaker Granola from the same year) that I actively collected. I still like the design with the team name "banner" over the picture. It made storing/sorting the cards so much easier. Lots of good memories with this set.
Nice set of cards, it was a good year
1986 was a awesome year! Thank you for this beautiful site. It is as if you read my mind.
I use your site more than the others. Nice way of getting info. For ex: I have a 1977 card that didnt have a printed back which is where info of the player and card is. So, naturally I came to your site.
Amazing what you guys have done here. Its like walking into a baseball card museum! LOVE IT!
I'm pretty sure that the 1986 Topps cards were the first trading cards I got. I was 7 at the time but I remember my parents buying me packs of this set.
1986 Topps was the first set I had. I know this set inside and out.
My first set that I really remember heavily collecting. Today worthless, but picture/player wise it had value |
