Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are scans preferred over photographs?
  • For submitting images to the database, the main goals are to provide uniformity in the quality of images across the site and to have accurate representations of the cards to archive the history of the hobby. To accomplish this, scans are preferable to photographs for reasons including:

    • Higher Resolution: Scanners typically offer higher resolution capabilities compared to most cameras. This allows for more detailed and accurate reproduction of the card, especially when capturing fine text or intricate details, preserving the sharpness and clarity of the text and images.
    • Color Accuracy: Scanners are designed to capture colors more accurately. They often use calibrated sensors and lighting conditions to reproduce colors faithfully, preserving the true color representation of the card.
    • Even Lighting: Scanners provide consistent and even lighting across the entire scanned area, minimizing shadows and ensuring uniform illumination. This helps to avoid distortions or uneven brightness that can occur with photographs taken under varying lighting conditions.
    • Flatbed Scanning: Many scanners utilize a flatbed surface, allowing cards to be scanned without any distortion caused by curvature or perspective.
