Indiana University Football - Get Me Out of Here!

by BucCollector - 28 cards (Last updated on May 15, 2024)

11. 2017 Panini Oklahoma State Cowboys #6 Michael Hunter

Hunter, for some reason, played four seasons at IU, where he was an academic All-Big Ten selection.

He then went to Oklahoma State as a graduate transfer, where he enjoyed his first winning season as a collegiate football player and his first trip to a bowl game.

12. 2017 Panini Classics - Timeless Tributes Orange #292 Gunner Kiel

Kiel was considered the best quarterback recruit in the nation by the Rivals.com and Scout.com recruiting networks. As a HS senior in 2011, he won the Indiana Mr. Football Award. Needless to say, his commitment was a major coup for the Hoosiers. It lasted about five minutes.

Kiel decommitted, then committed to Louisiana State University in January 2012. He then decommitted and enrolled at the University of Notre Dame that same month. After a season with the Irish, he transferred to Cincinnati where he led the conference in passing yards.

13. 2014 Upper Deck USA Football - Autograph #45 Tommy Mister

As a HS QB, Mister was twice named to the All-Illinois team and amassed more than 3,100 yards from scrimmage as a senior. He was rated the No. 44 athlete nationally by Rivals.com in 2013.

At IU, he suffered a season-ending leg injury during preseason camp. That was it for Tommy in Bloomington. He transferred to Northern Illinois and then to St. Xavier

14. 2011 Panini Adrenalyn XL #183 BenJarvus Green-Ellis

As an IU freshman in 2003, Green-Ellis had a breakout year with 938 yards and seven touchdowns on 225 carries. As a sophomore in 2004, Green-Ellis was a part of a two running back rotation with Chris Taylor. Still, he led the team with 794 yards rushing on 231 carries and scored five touchdowns. He left when then-coach Gerry DiNardo was fired.

At Ole Miss, Green-Ellis was only the second running back in the school's history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He was named as an All-SEC first-team selection and played six seasons in the NFL.

15. 2004-09 TK Legacy Ohio State Buckeyes - Buckeyes Autographs #B124 John Kerr

John Kerr grew up in Strongsville Ohio, where he was twice All-State and the 2001 Ohio Defensive Player of the Year. Nonetheless, he did not receive a scholarship offer from Ohio State.

Instead, Kerr went to IU, where he led the Hoosiers in tackles as a true freshman. He also led all Big Ten freshmen in tackles and posted 10 tackles in the game vs Ohio State (IU lost that game 45-17). At season's end, IU finished last in the Big Ten while Ohio State won the National Championship.

That was enough for Kerr. He transferred to Ohio State, where he walked on to the football team. As a senior, he cracked the Buckeyes' starting lineup and eventually spent some time in the Minnesota Vikings training camp.

16. 2003 Bowman #218 Jeremi Johnson

Jeremi Johnson played his first three seasons at Indiana, where he was named to the All-Big Ten Conference freshman team in 1999. During his time at Indiana, the Hoosiers finished ninth, eleventh, and seventh in the conference.

Johnson suffered a hamstring injury in spring practice in 2002. He transferred to Western Kentucky University for his senior season, where he was a key player on the Hilltoppers' NCAA Division I-AA championship team. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL draft and played six seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals.

17. 2002 Legends Sports Memorabilia - Future Legends #NNO Rex Grossman

Rex Grossman was a Bloomington native whose grandfather, also named Rex, played for Indiana in the 1940s. To the chagrin of the Hoosier faithful, young Rex spurned offers from the Cream and Crimson and went to Florida instead. At Florida, he was a first-team All-American and was picked in the first round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears.

18. 2002 TK Legacy Michigan Wolverines - Go Blue Autographs #MGB86 Curtis Mallory

The third football-playing son of then-IU coach Bill Mallory, Curt passed up the opportunity to stay home, leaving town to join his brothers in Ann Arbor. After a stellar career at Michigan, he followed his father into the coaching profession and is currently the head coach at Indiana State.

19. 1990 Pro Set #68 Sam Wyche

Sam Wyche coached the Hoosiers for just one season, 1983. IU posted a 3-8 record. Wyche got out as quickly as he could.

20. 2009 Press Pass Legends #69 Lee Corso

Lee Corso coached the Hoosiers from 1973 to 1982, and despite some successes his work at IU is best characterized by a timeout called during a 1976 game against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes took an early 6-0 lead. But in the first minute of the second quarter, according to a 1977 Sports Illustrated article by John Underwood, something bizarre happened.

Indiana scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point. Corso immediately called time and huddled his players on the sideline, where he had a photographer take a picture of the happy group at an angle which allowed the scoreboard to fill the background: INDIANA 7, OHIO STATE 6. Asked why he did this, Corso said, “It’s the first time in 25 years Indiana has led Ohio State in a game. I looked it up. Can you believe it? Twenty-five years! The goal of a lifetime!”

Needless to say, the lead did not last. OSU went on to win the game, 47-7.

Corso was fired after ten years with an overall record of 41–68–2 at Indiana. Since 1987, he's been an analyst on ESPN's College GameDay.

This list was very well researched, and a lot of these names I had forgotten, and others I learned by reading this. What a trip down memory lane! Great job!

Side note, this also depressed the heck outta me!

@hoosier83

Thanks for the comment!  Sorry to say I have a few updates coming that should disappoint you even further.

Yep, excellent list! This is something all college fans have to deal with, just some more than others, I guess. But with the transfer portal and related rules I know we'll be seeing more. AJ Barner was an underrated part of Michigan's success this year.

It's easy to be an Ohio State fan. The rest of us enjoy a challenge/punishment.

Ugh.  This is a rough list.  I am glad I have it marginally better as an Illini fan.

This is as about as rough as Lee Corso calling a timeout during the 2nd Quarter of the '76 season to get a photograph of team leading Ohio State 7-6 before losing 47-7. I guess you could add Corso to the list as finding success in the broadcast booth rather than as a coach.
