96. 1973 Topps #511 Sam McDowell

New as of 11/01/2023

1959: High School Quarterback

A quote from the 5/23/1966 issue of Sports Illustrated on his younger days: "Sam liked football best, but can you imagine a 6-foot-5, 160-pound quarterback who got creamed on every play!"

Sam's Dad, Tom, played college QB for Pittsburgh according to Sam's 1972 Topps Boyhood card, was Tom a lefty too?

Tom / Thomas / T H Mc Dowell listed on 1929 roster and SI article mentions him as being on the 1930's teams

97. 1972 Topps #554 Wilbur Wood

New as of 11/01/2023

98. 1971 Pro Stars Montreal Expos #NNO Dan McGinn

In 1962, he quarterbacked the football team at Omaha Cathedral High School and later won the MVP award at the Nebraska high school all-star game. McGinn signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Nebraska under legendary coach Bob Devaney, but instead decided to attend the University of Notre Dame. His playing time at quarterback was limited, however, because he played behind John Huarte, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1964; during his time with the Fighting Irish, McGinn also spent time at punter, split end, running back, and defensive back.

College Passing: 5 of 6, 83 yards

100. 2001 Topps American Pie - Profiles in Courage #PIC18 Vida Blue

New as of 10/21/23 (see back)

Blue was equally renowned as a high-school football player, starring as a quarterback. He was recruited by major colleges, including Notre Dame, Purdue, and Houston. Houston was recruiting Blue to play quarterback at a time when there were no African-Americans playing quarterback for major colleges. But Blue’s father died during his senior year in high school, and he decided that he needed to support his family. Baseball would provide that support sooner than football might. He was selected by the Kansas City Athletics in the second round of the 1967 draft and was offered a two-year contract a $12,500 per year. Although he later said he had a stronger desire to play football than baseball, Blue signed with the A’s. (SABR)

Sports Illustrated did an article on Vida Blue (7/12/1971) which said he had an uncle on his mother's side with the last name of Henderson who was a lefty QB at Grambling ... he's not in TCDB ... The task of finding out his full name and the years he played is still available.

Remembering non-QB players passing the ball is the easy part. Recalling (or finding out) if they're lefties is the hard part.

Sports Illustrated did an article on Vida Blue (7/12/1971) which said he had an uncle on his mother's side with the last name of Henderson who was a lefty QB at Grambling ... he's not in TCDB ... it'll take forever to find out his full name and the years he played, so I'll leave that task for someone else.

*******

Per the article below, Vida Blue as a senior in HS threw 17 TD passes to Hudson ... does NOT say that Hudson also played quarterback, but it's certainly plausible that he did.  It's really tough trying to find out stuff on Hudson via online searches.
